Ginette, queen bee-2013

Last year was the first year of beekeeping for us. Our queen was named Ginette and she was a prolific breeder filling the second brood box in two weeks. We were told a new hive wouldn’t swarm in its first year, neither would a new queen. Swarming in August was far too late and so that was out of the question. So much for the experts. Ginette decided to leave on the 19th August with over half of the colony and did what all good bees should do, multiply. We learnt a great deal over that period and are slowly anticipating the needs for this year’s colonies. Interesting to note the swarming date coinciding with the lunar cycle. More mysteries to study…
